g(x) is the graph of f(x) translated 1 unit down, parallel to the y-axis

given f(x) then f(x) ± c

translates f(x) by c units vertically up if c is positive and

translates f(x) by c units vertically down if c is negative

here f(x) - 1 ← move down vertically by 1 unit
