2 1/4 = 2 + 1/4

(1 + 2/3) + (2 + 1/4) = (1 + 2) + (2/3 + 1/4) = 3  + (2/3 + 1/4)

= 3 + (8/12 + 3/12)

= 3 + 11/12

= 3 11/12

2 1/4 = 8/4 + 1/4 = 9/4

then:
