so now you have

 7x - 54 + y + y= 180
7x - 54 + 2y = 180 (1)

and

8x + y = 180 so y = 180 - 8x

substitute y = 180 - 8x into equation (1) 7x - 54 + 2y = 180

7x - 54 + 2y = 180
7x - 54 + 2(180 - 8x)= 180
7x - 54 + 360 - 16x = 180
-9x + 306 = 180
-9x = -126
   x = 14
